The short answer
Villa's Pro Painting stains decks across Bloomington and the southwest Twin Cities. The deck is washed and dried, loose fibers and rough spots are sanded, the house and plants are covered, and stain goes on boards, rails, balusters and stairs.
What a deck job includes
- Washing to lift dirt, mildew and old graying wood fibers, then a full drying window before any stain goes on.
- Rough or splintered spots sanded so the stain soaks in evenly.
- Siding, the foundation, plants and the patio covered before we start.
- Stain on the deck boards, rails, balusters and stairs, with the board ends and the gaps reached so water doesn't sit there.
- A walkthrough when it's done, plus the stain name and color so you can touch it up later.
Choosing a stain
- Transparent stains show the most wood grain but wear soonest, especially on boards in full sun.
- Semi-transparent stains keep some grain while adding color and more protection.
- Solid stains look closer to paint, hide old blotches and last longest, which makes them the usual choice for older decks.
- We'll look at the deck with you and recommend the type that suits its age and how much sun it gets.
When to stain in Minnesota
- Deck staining runs from spring to fall, on dry days with mild temperatures, and the wood needs to be dry before stain goes on.
- Exterior work books up from May through October, so it helps to get your estimate in early. A deck is easy to add when the house is being repainted anyway.
“They also stained my deck which turned out really great.”

Questions
It depends on the stain type and how much sun the deck gets. If water stops beading on the boards and soaks in right away, it's due.
Usually it gets another coat of solid stain. Going back to a clear or semi-transparent look means stripping the old coating, which is a bigger job we'd price separately.
Yes. Many customers book the deck with an exterior repaint so both are done in one visit.
